Water, water, water

Hi there, I changed about 10% of the tank water today and gave the algae a scraping just on the front of the tank. Well, I had to leave a snack for Speckled Jim and George!

    • Hi, I have to admit to buying plants I liked and planting them straight in the gravel; that is the only substrata. I have the lights on 11-12 hours a day. I was given plant food drops when I bout them but only put them in that first day. From my reading about the Nitrogen Cycle, once the tank is cycled, the plants ingest nitrates which act as a fertilizer. They will in turn supply nutrients to the fish (mine do nibble at them too!) along with dissolved oxygen. My plants are not perfect, they do have some brown or nibbled bits here and there but the overall fresh green effect is great. My Nitrates tend to be around the 20ppm mark. What is your Nitrate level?
